Jim Denaro - Meeting Report

Since the last meet I have replaced the rear springs and repaired the anti roll bar as it was binding a bit, probably due to trailer miles. We went to the track on Thursday to set up and while it wasn’t raining the grass area was pretty much water logged and the forecast didn’t look good.

Friday morning the sun was shining so we warmed up and headed out for our first qualifier at 11:47am and it ran well but felt lazy running 9.899 @ 133.38mph. I decided to change a few things for the second run but before we got to run the rain came and after a couple of hours they cancelled our second qualifier and called it a day. At this point I should have gone back to original tune or least closer as we would only get one more shot at best.

Saturday and although it rained all the way driving to the track, sometimes torrential it was fine at the track and the start wasn’t delayed that much. We ran at 12:02pm and it felt a little livelier but only ran 9.969 @ 134.27. Now I would have to get ready for the first round, I put the tune and tyre pressure in between the two runs. After intermittent showers and plenty of stress filled waiting around wondering what to dial in, what the track would be like or if we would run at all we got the call and ran at 7:33pm. It was Harry Plessas in the other lane, I dialed 9.90 to his 9.22, I got the start .016 to .061 and backed off to a 10.002 and he slowed to a 9.369 with us both having traction issues.

Sunday and the sun was shining, it looked like it was going to be a great day. We moved the car onto the roadway in the pits as it was starting to clear out a bit and the grass areas had turned to mud. We were up against Iraklis Kazanzidis at 9:53am for round two, I dialed 9.90 to his 8.09, I had the start line advantage .013 to .092 and was able to back off to a 9.977 to his 9.109 and take the win with the track feeling much better. Once we got back to the pits and checked off who had won it was clear that no matter what happened from here on in I couldn’t loss the lead in the championship so I was feeling more comfortable about the rest of the meeting. At 12:19pm it was time for the third round and the winner of this race would get a bye into the semis, I had to race Jason Stares who dialed 7.66 to my 9.92, I out reacted him .023 to .167 and backed off (not enough) running 9.896 to his 7.657 losing a double breakout race. I have a little work to do to get the consistency back were it needs to be if I am to fend off the group of racers that are right behind me at the Winters.

Thanks to my crew and to the Sydney Dragway for persisting in trying conditions.
