Once we had set our pit
area, Willowbank Raceway were putting on a Test n Tune
on the Friday night before the event. They had put a new
timing system in and they needed some race vehicles to
test the new equipment out. Things weren't going to
smoothly with new equipment at first and we would only
get one pass in, but one pass is better than none. We
ran 8.592 @ 155.29 with the dragster getting a little
lose at around half track, but we were ready for
quailifying which was up first thing in the morning.

| Our first qualifier was
at 9:10am. We ran 8.525 @ 155.44 mph. Our next qualifier
was at 11:50am. Our 60ft time was a little off as the
track had jaws on it on the starting line and it pulled
the engine down. We ran 8.613 @ 154.56 mph. There is not
much we can do, they throw alot of VHT on the track up
here. Our final qualifier would be at 8:35pm and the
track surface was killer. We ran 8.594 @ 154.00 mph.
With our three qualifiers completed we were looking good
for our first round the following morning. |

With ANDRA introducing a
revised seeding schedule, the field would be seeded now
from 32 vehicles instead of 16. First round saw us up
against Tony Bellert in his Chevy powered Rear Engine
Dragster. I would dial in 8.52 while Tony would dial in
7.80.
Tony got the start line advantage with a .015 light to
my .034. The margin of victory was .016 which was the
difference in the lights, with Tony running 7.840 on his
7.80 dial in, to my 8.557 on my 8.52 dial in. At least I
left with a green light as the last few times in which
we have raced at Willowbank, I have left gone out first
round with a big red cherry. |
